Get Involved

Parental involvement is a combination of commitment and active participation on the part of parent to the school and to the student. As parents you can ensure that your child receives the benefits from parental involvement by staying up to date on what is happening in the classroom.

Tulsa Public Schools is committed to helping your child develop the academic knowledge and critical thinking he or she needs to succeed in school and beyond. As a result, these involvement opportunities empower parents to take action. By connecting parents to school officials, community members, other parents, knowledge, and powerful allies, these opportunities build bridges and networks that support schools and sustain whole communities.

Peary Parent Involvement Plan

2018 - 2019 School year

Peary Elementary School
Parental Involvement Policy

Purpose:
Tulsa Public Schools shall promote parent involvement in all schools as mandated by Title I, Every Child Succeeds Act of 2015 (ESSA) and work as equal partners with parents in providing quality learning experiences for every scholar, every day, without exception.

The Board believes and acknowledges that parent involvement raises the academic achievement level of scholars. Additionally, parents become empowered, teacher morale improves and communities grow stronger when parents take an active role in educating their children. To this end, schools shall involve parents in the education of their children at all grade levels. The Superintendent or his/her designee shall provide coordination, technical assistance and other support necessary to assist all schools in planning and implementing effective parent involvement activities to improve scholar academic achievement and school performance. ESSA -Title I Parent Involvement establishes that to build capacity for parent involvement within schools, a district is to “develop jointly with, agree on with, and distribute to parents of participating children a written Parent Involvement Policy”.

Building Parents Capacity for Involvement

The Board believes that empowering parents to insist on improvement and giving schools extra incentive to do so and by giving parents options regarding their children’s education helps the district to realize its vision of “Excellence and High Expectations with a Commitment to All.” As a result of this belief, the Board shall create an environment of supportive and collaborative parent involvement.

1.  Accountability: Peary utilizes various accountability measures to insure that the needs of our scholars are being met. Parents, scholars, and teachers will sign an “Accountability Agreement” during the fall of each school year that outlines the responsibilities each holds in the education of the scholar. Scholars and parents will receive written notification of the Code of Conduct, Dress Code, and Attendance Policies at the beginning of each school year to make parents and scholars aware of acceptable behavior and the consequences of violating those expectations.  Progress reports will be sent every 5 weeks and report cards every 9 weeks to help parents monitor their scholar’s academic progress.

2.  Educational Opportunities: Peary will maintain a Parent Resource Center to assist parents with increasing scholar achievement. The Parent Resource Center will house a collection of parenting books, and community resource information to provide parents with the tools necessary to help develop successful scholars. Peary will also provide professional development opportunities to faculty and staff to strengthen and enhance the ‘teacher-parent’ relationship.

3.  Training: Peary will provide training such as literacy training and training on how to use technology, to help parents work with their children to improve achievement.

4.  Communication: Peary is committed to keeping parents informed of its activities.  Newsletters, SchoolWay app, School Connect telephone messaging system, the Web/internet, television, radio, and newspaper announcements are used to inform parents of Peary’s school events, meetings, and other important information.  Peary will provide this information in an understandable and uniform format in a language that parents can understand.

5.  Participation: Studies show that when parents are actively involved in their child’s education, scholars perform better academically, are more likely to continue their education after high school, are more disciplined, and communicate better with their parents. Parents are encouraged to participate in school activities and volunteer with athletics and scholar organizations. Peary meets with parents quarterly and focuses on improving scholar achievement through parental involvement. These meetings are open to all Peary parents.

6.  Program information for Parents: Peary will provide assistance to parents of all children in understanding such topics as the state’s academic content and achievement standards, the assessments being used, the requirements of Title 1, Part A, Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA) and how to monitor their children’s progress and work with educators to improve their achievement.

7.  Educate Educators: Peary shall educate teachers, pupil services personnel, principals and other staff, with the assistance of parents, in the value and utility of contributions of parents, and in how to reach out to, communicate with, and work with parents as equal partners, implement and coordinate parent programs and build ties between parents and the school.

8.  Title I Meetings: Peary will hold an annual Title I meeting to inform parents of “Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA), Annual Yearly Progress, and their rights under Title I.

9.  Informational Meetings: In order to foster positive and meaningful interaction between parents and staff, Peary will hold meetings throughout the school year. These meetings include, but are not limited to, Back to School Night, Parent/Teacher Conferences, Family Literacy Night, Field Day, Book Fairs and educational seminars.

10. Preschool Coordination: Peary shall “to the extent feasible and appropriate,” coordinate and integrate parental involvement programs with our Early Childhood Program, and conduct other activities, such as parent resource centers, that encourage and support parents in more fully participating in the  education of their children.

11. Other Requested Activities: Peary shall provide such other reasonable support for parental involvement activities as parents may request.
